Exterior Painting Guide
Choosing Access for Exterior Painting
The safest practical way to reach each surface affects preparation, protection, staging and cost. Access is selected after inspecting the building and its surroundings as part of an exterior painting scope.
Access Starts With a Site Assessment
- Height and distance from a safe setup area.
- Ground bearing conditions, slopes, gardens and fragile surfaces.
- Overhead services, traffic, pedestrians and neighbouring property.
- Balconies, setbacks, awnings and other obstructions.
- The preparation and coating work that must be performed at each position.
- Building access, permits and restricted work hours.
Common Access Categories
Some low work can be reached from the ground or with suitable portable equipment. Larger elevations may require mobile scaffolds, elevated work platforms or fixed scaffold. The method must suit the site, the task and current work health and safety requirements; a photograph alone is not enough to make that decision.
Document Access in the Quote
The proposal should identify the allowed access method or allowance, the areas it covers, who provides permits or building access, and any assumptions that could change after closer inspection. This makes competing scopes easier to compare.
