Common Exterior Painting Failures, and How We Prevent Them
Problem: Paint bubbling and peeling within 12 months
Exterior paint failure is almost always a preparation failure. Paint applied over damp substrate, inadequately cleaned surfaces, or without the correct primer system will fail quickly regardless of product quality.
Solution: Mandatory dryness checks and substrate testing
We test substrate moisture before any primer is applied, ensure surfaces are fully washed and dry, and use appropriate primers for every substrate type. No paint goes on wet or inadequately prepared surfaces.
Problem: Render cracks reappearing through the new paint
Painting directly over moving cracks locks the paint film across an active joint, the paint tears as the substrate moves, and cracks reappear within months of completion.
Solution: Flexible sealants and elastomeric bridging systems
We rake out active cracks, fill with flexible polyurethane sealant, and where appropriate apply elastomeric bridging primer systems that can accommodate ongoing minor movement without splitting.
Problem: Mould and algae returning within a year
Standard exterior paints applied in shaded, damp-prone areas don’t contain adequate biocides, mould returns quickly and damages the paint film below it.
Solution: Anti-fungal treatments and mould-inhibiting paint systems
We pre-treat affected areas with appropriate fungicidal wash, and specify Dulux products with mould-inhibiting additives for shade-affected and moisture-prone exterior walls.

How We Manage an Exterior Painting Project
Exterior projects require careful planning, safe access management, and precise sequencing. Here’s how Brushworks runs them.
We assess every elevation, identify substrate issues, determine access requirements, and specify the appropriate coating system before quoting.
Step 2
Access Setup and Safety
Scaffolding or EWP is erected, public protection is installed, and WHS documentation is completed before any work commences.
Step 3
Wash, Repair, and Prime
High-pressure washing, crack repair, sealant application, and primer systems applied in the correct sequence for the substrate.
Step 4
Topcoat Application
Premium exterior topcoats applied by brush, roller, and spray as appropriate for each surface, minimum two finish coats on all elements.
Step 5
Inspection and Handover
Final walkthrough, access removed, site cleared. Written warranty and paint specification records handed over at completion.

How long should an exterior repaint last in Sydney’s climate?
With correct preparation and premium coating systems, an exterior repaint on a Sydney property should last 8–12 years before requiring full repaint. Coastal-facing surfaces in direct salt air may require attention sooner. Annual inspection and minor touch-ups extend the life of the overall system significantly. Do you handle access and scaffolding or do we need to arrange that separately?
We manage all access requirements as part of our service, scaffolding, elevated work platforms, and rope access are all assessed and quoted as part of the original proposal. You deal with one company, not multiple trades. All access meets NSW WHS requirements.
What’s the best exterior paint for Sydney’s coastal suburbs?
Dulux Weathershield is our primary recommendation for Sydney coastal environments. Can you paint during winter or do we need to wait for warmer weather?
