Written Project Terms
Understand the Painting Warranty Before Work Starts
Warranty coverage depends on the written terms attached to the accepted quote or contract. Ask for those terms before authorising work and keep them with the final scope, colour schedule and product records.
What the Written Terms Should Identify
- The warranty period and when it begins.
- The workmanship defects covered by the contractor.
- Surfaces, rooms or stages included in the project.
- Exclusions for water entry, movement, substrate failure, contamination or work by others.
- Any maintenance, notice or access requirements.
- How to make a claim and what records to provide.
Workmanship and Product Warranties Are Different
A contractor’s workmanship warranty and a paint manufacturer’s product warranty can cover different issues and have different conditions. Ask who is responsible for assessing a failure, what evidence is required and whether the proposed coating system is being used within the manufacturer’s specification.
Keep a Useful Project Record
Retain the accepted quote, variations, invoices, colour schedule, product names and completion date. Photograph completed areas and report a concern promptly using the claim process in the written terms.
